Na recently dropped a brunette bomb on us within announcing that his following album will be called The Marshall Mathers LP 2; the sequel to his work of genius and still the most controversial plus dramatic album in hip-hop… perhaps ANY modern songs history thus far? Wow; ballsy move Em, ballsy shift.
Ballsy is definitely what I have personally been vying to get from Em to be considering that he decided to take moderate criticism to heart regarding Relapse (2009) and create the particular sometimes excellent but extremely compromised follow-up: Recovery (2010). Em raps his butt off on both albums, as always (and doesn’t get almost enough credit for their technical innovation) of course , yet neither album really took place as a classic.
Time after that, to take what he’s discovered from the past two that his 4th classic recording?
The Marshall Mathers LP 2 would certainly be a suitable title for that. But except if the material shares conceptual or thematic heritage with all the original, then the title will certainly pretty much mean nothing plus seem like a tacky shift. I hope that’s not the case, and am highly doubt it is; Na is not the type to just consider his most acclaimed recording and put out an official follow up to it 13 years afterwards for no good reason, besides sales or ‘the bang of it’… this should clearly mean something. This particular material must be bonkers, bat-shit crazy or just downright gob-spewing in that same vein. Alright, now I’ve excited myself… not in that way!
We have been provided an official glimpse in to the possible sound of the album, plus it’s called “Berzerk”…
This is actually the first official single through MMLP2, and it seems to show a potential ‘throwback’ to 1980s hip-hop theme to the recording, which we may assume is simply for the visual of this solitary and video, if not for your involvement of Rick Rubin, and the production of this monitor. And check out Em’s initial circulation here.
For those who don’t understand - Rick Rubin is really a legendary producer who created such classics as Increasing Hell by Run-D. Meters. C., Radio by LMOST ALL Cool J, and of course Certified to Ill by the Beastie Boys; the strong respect and influence toward who, can clearly be noticed in “Berzerk” throughout.
There is no benefits most impressive is Em’s decision to do such a blatant love letter to hip-hop, at this stage in his career. In most cases, you may in fact expect this at this point aka the ‘later phase’ of a rapper’s profession, but , Em is barely winding down. His final album had two from the biggest hits, and in reality THE biggest hit (“Love how you Lie”) since he moved foot in to the commercial world of rap music, those 14 years ago. Plus, Na is just not usually the type to undertake something like this; he completely just does his own matter; never has he therefore openly done something like this particular, and I think… it’s quite cool.
I had been hoping Na would take a bit of motivation from Kanye in actually pinning down a major aesthetic for whatever recording came after Recovery. Not really that Em doesn’t generally find a ‘look’ and a ‘feel’ for his albums, yet picking something as distinct and meaningful to hip-hop as this, and really kind of… standing by that visual plus allowing it to live and gently breathe through the music, is quite stunning.
Production is still a bit of an issue, personally, as I am expecting this is not loud and violent like Recovery, which it really is already showing signs of getting. The original MMLP was thinning and stripped down, plus that’s what allowed Em’s fierce rapping to take centre-stage and really grab you each and every turn; it’s clear, noisy, crisp and in your face, your own ears can’t hide from this. I just hope this he case with MMLP2.
One thing I think we can all state for sure, is… he stunned us again. Never inside a million years would have I actually expected him to do this, only at that point… I mean, Em is basically now asking us in order to his new work in order to his most prized. This really is risky fucking business. Plus it’s fucking exciting. MMLP2 is coming!!
